More added for the final Wide Awake Festival line up announced!
Wide Awake Festival, the counter cultural celebration set in Brockwell Park, has established itself as one of London’s most forward-thinking and well-curated festivals in recent years. Today they announce a new batch of exciting additions to their 2024 lineup, including some of the best up-and-coming and established leftfield talent around, as well as a host of politically-informed panels and workshops.
The lineup for Brockwell on Saturday 25th May continues to become ever more eclectic, with new announcements including electrifying South Londoners Fat Dog, who have caused a stir across the city with their chaotic live shows, and queer avant gardist Lynks, described as a “horror-drag pop star” by The Guardian. Also new to the bill are New Orleans DIY heroes Special Interest, Texas-based multi-instrumentalists Being Dead, and experimental psych quartet Plantoid.
Aside from the music, there’s a range of talks and workshops to dive into. Independent, anti-capitalist, ad-free publication hate zine hosts a zine fair from 12pm to 6pm. At 2pm, wellness platform Woo chairs a panel talk on reshaping what wellness and feeling good looks like to Gen Z and Gen Y, before performer, activist and host of politically informed punk scratch night How To Catch A Pig Liv Wynter stages a discussion on being a DIY political artist in 2024 at 3pm, with speakers including Janey Starling, sad queers club and Toby Evans Jesra + The Snailman. Later in the afternoon, feminist direct action group Sisters Uncut run a banner making workshop expressing love and solidarity with the people of Gaza, and Gig Buddies cap off the early evening activities with a Club Soda Takeover at 5pm, welcoming South London’s favourite learning disabled artists to the stage. Wide Awake have also announced their partnership with Médecins Sans Frontières, the humanitarian medical care charity known for its projects in conflict zones and in countries affected by endemic diseases.
With each announcement, Wide Awake 2024 loads up on indie legends and next-generation innovators. Earlier this year they announced London post-punk figureheads Dry Cleaning, Singaporean experimental artist Yeule, synth-pop icon Johnny Jewel, PC Music star Hannah Diamond, Felt legend Lawrence Hayward brings Mozart Estate to Brockwell, Brighton punks and “Iggy Pop’s new favourite band” Lambrini Girls, Talking Heads dance fest Byrne’s Night, Franco-American glam rockers Faux Real, Australian singer-songwriter Grace Cummings, New Wave revivalists The Itch and Deep Tan, and Boston indie duo Sweeping Promises. They join headliners King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Slowdive and Mercury Prize winners Young Fathers, as well as recently added UK post-punk favourites Squid, beloved DJs Ben UFO and Helena Hauff, electronic pop legend Alice Glass, Australian rockers C.O.F.F.I.N, and Berlin electronic duo Modeselektor.
Not to mention an appearance from acclaimed experimental DJ and composer David Holmes, as well as Iranian-Dutch artist Sevdaliza, New York singer-songwriter INIKO, Seattle based quartet La Luz, NTS favourite and South East London legend OK Williams, spellbinding Brighton avant-folk quartet The New Eves, Australian industrial rockers HTRK, and New York noise-rock band Model/Actriz, and many more. With US radio station KEXP hosting the main stage, Wide Awake 2024 is all set up to be the most unmissable event in the festival calendar.
The festival prides itself with line-ups that have an equal gender split and 2023 saw it work further on a sustainable ‘Positive Policy’, which was set up to change the way live music events affect the planet. With social, cultural and environmental awareness being key to the very make up of Wide Awake, the festival itself is a party for those that want not only the best live acts but also want to encourage change.
With its renowned programme of leftfield indie, post punk, electronica and techno, Wide Awake 2023 set the bar high with a stellar lineup including Caroline Polachek, Shygirl, Daniel Avery (Live), Coucou Chloe, Blondeshell, Enumclaw, Jockstrap, Joy Orbison, Molchat Doma, Oneohtrix Point Never, Optimo (Espacio), The Bug Club, The Underground Youth, VTSS, Osees, Gilla Band and more.
It’s a tough act to follow, but with this latest batch of lineup coups under its belt, Wide Awake 2024 is shaping up to be another phenomenal year for one of London’s finest festivals. Wide Awake is brought to you by Bad Vibrations, LNZRT and the crew behind MOTH Club and The Shacklewell Arms.
