B/O/M’s Party Playlist
B/O/M is an electronic music producer based in Paris. Passionate about live performance, he models a personal style between deep Techno and emotionally rich and detailed electronica. He has just released the first single off his forthcoming debut studio album so we caught up with him to see what is on his playlist at the moment. B/O/M – Brothers EP is out now on Family Piknik Music.
B/O/M – Brothers [Family Piknik Music] A few months ago, I digitized some old videotapes from my parents, and was very affected to remember my childhood with my little brother. I had nothing in mind when I started this track but when the chords and bassline were there, I was hearing everything and just had to compulsively drop the elements. “Brothers” is this kind of self healing track, an emotional decompression valve with a touch of melancholy but (surprisingly) a strong positive energy and “feel good” vibe.
Robot Love – Boxwood [Dirtybird] This year I’ve tried to assemble quick mixes every month, trying different approaches browsing and filtering Beatport. It’s hard to describe the satisfaction and excitation of the discovery when serendipity / algorithms bring this kind of fabulous track. I love the organic noises and textures, the erratic artifacts that really bring the melody to life and such a perfect management of energy throughout the piece.
Floating Points – ARP3 [Pluto] Very important work to me. This track illustrates the kind of sophistication and sensuality that takes me on board. A quite melancholic harmony with a powerful appealing groove that is the perfect mix of emotions that take me out of my head. I love the jazzy funky keys, the growling bass, very electric, rough, and these swinging drums that act like magnets to fire up your body.
Third Son – Murmurs [Polymath] Third Son is very prolific and produces very interesting tracks. I see him like a researcher, exploring soundscapes, gear, modular… On this track particularly, he reminds me of some of James Holden’s old tracks. I understand and I love his music. Holden is in the top 5 major influences to me: a track like “Lump”, the sonic matter really stretched and kneaded, squeezed and saturated. So much energy and beauty in this.
Stephan Bodzin – Liebe Ist… [Herzblut Recordings] This track could embody a whole decade of my life, at least. Its eponymous album has certainly left a deep imprint on me. So beautiful and powerful and strong. I love the energy of Bodzin’s bassline synths, sustain-hold with lots of modulations. That’s his signature sound, with the noise release on the hi-hats. Very effective. I feel so thankful for his music. I yelled that to him a few years ago at Rex Club (Paris), after a performance and he didn’t care but at least I told him (ahaha).
Max Cooper – Reflect [Mesh Records] Max Cooper has been a huge blow. Back in 2011 he was releasing more minimal-techno tracks, he already had this complex noisy approach. Now I love everything that’s being released on his label Mesh, so much precision and width in the sound – the textures, the complexity and the harmony that emerge from their chaotic sounds. I also think of Alex Banks, Rob Clouth, Brecon… It’s like their music speaks to another level of my consciousness.
Pontias & Convergence System – Go Bro(Extended Mix) [Family Piknik Music] Such a strong melodic track, with a beautiful cinematic dimension. This tune has a lot of personality, with its slow pace and unusual groove. Extended mix for longer pleasure. Pontias is a team mate as he’s also a member of the Family Piknik artists roster. I’m happy because he also dropped a very cool remix for my new single track ‘Brothers’.
Four Tet – Teenage Birdsong (OvermonoRemix) [Text Records] Of course, Four Tet’s music has had a major impact on my approach to production. Perfect blend of simplicity and cleanliness, swinging grooves, impossible synth melodies, anticipation and surprise, and craziness… You must have seen his very modest studio setup, he posted a photo on twitter that got answered with hilarious memes (ahaha). This remix by Overmono is very interesting, The snare is incredible, I love the breaks, the management of space, and this after-afterhours feeling of a moment I wish could last forever.
Rival Consoles – Articulation [Erased Tapes] I love the way Rival Consoles pushes his synths, the wide ambiances and spaces he creates, his industrial / organic textures. He also has brilliant melodies and structures ideas. He’s often very progressive, starting with a minimalistic cymbal or snare that will develop in a gigantic techno cathedral. Also, if you have an interest in graphic visualisation (like I do), you’ll like the diagrams he’s sketching (on his website) to put down some ideas of sounds, structures or other concepts.
Jon Hopkins – Vessel [K7 Records] I discovered Jon Hopkins with this track at a dance performance from choreographer Wayne McGregor, while I was still a student. I can still feel the magic of this moment and the chills in me. I don’t remember how many times I’ve cried on his last album though but probably a lot (ahaha). His music tears my soul up – in such a good way!
