Heaven After Dark Arrives in the UK for their Highly Anticipated Debut Event at Studio 338
Musical maverick Perry Farrell is the creator of one of the most successful and legendary global festivals ‘Lollapalooza’. Perry and performer and singer wife, Etty Lau Farrell are bringing their unique Heaven After Dark club event to the UK for the first time on September 16th at London’s Studio 338. Perry and Etty will be performing with select artists alongside a carefully curated mix of iconic underground legends and breakthrough innovative artists from the electronic dance world. It will be a party that delivers a next gen experience where art and music are twisted into all new realities for a truly memorable event not to be missed.
Heaven After Dark brings together cultural enthusiasts and purveyors of the best in electronic dance music to deliver a club event like no other. Following three sold out events in LA with headliners like Maceo Plex and Christian Loffler, the party now arrives in the UK. There is a marked difference in the way the events merge the worlds of live performance and cutting-edge DJ sets, and feature authentic artists who were schooled deep in the underground scene to offer a hybrid, truly immersive, and rather special one-off clubbing experience.
The first event will be an awe-inspiring all day & night party that not only promotes true artistry but also celebrates diversity and collaboration through a mix of iconic and emerging artists twisting art and music into all new realities. The lineup includes Tiga, Christian Loffler (Live), Magda, Audion (Live), Radio Slave, Thylacine (Live), Matthew Dear and Olof Dreijer of The Knife. There will also be a special guest DJ playing a headline slot, which is currently kept under wraps.
Perry Farrell, labelled the ‘Godfather of Alternative Rock’ and frontman of the iconic band Jane’s Addiction has always been at the cutting-edge of art and music, and recently founded an electronic music label under the ‘Heaven After Dark’ banner . Etty Lau Farrell has forged her own legacy, from being part of the original ‘Pussycat Dolls’ lineup to dancing and performing with the likes of Madonna, Ricky Martin, Bon Jovi and Jane’s Addiction. Never one to sit still for long, Etty is currently working on her debut anticipated solo EP release and co-produces the highly anticipated events for Heaven After Dark where production, performance and aesthetic are front & centre.
Perry Farrell has a deep history of hosting underground parties dating back to his earliest days in the scene and Heaven After Dark taps into that primal energy. Studio 338 is a perfect venue for this London debut with its growing stature (#21 DJ Mag Top 100 clubs) and its range of best-in-class indoor and outdoor club spaces. Working to bring the project to life are managers Ian Jenkinson and Michael James. Like Perry, Ian has deep seated roots in this space having established the award-winning dance music promoter Universe, where he co-created the legendary Tribal Gathering festival and Final Frontier nights.
Legend has it that Tiga brought some of the first true raves to Montreal as Perry did for LA in his scene. He is a renowned producer and highly influential DJ who owns Turbo Records has been integral in the success of acts like Chromeo, Gesaffelstein, Duke Dumont and most recently, ANNA & Charlotte de Witte. Tiga constantly innovates with every track and DJ set he plays across the world’s best clubs and festivals. His high impact sound has defined the sound of the underground for decades and he never fails to make a lasting impression.
Electronic/techno producer Christian Löffler specialises in emotive, melancholic music that feels isolated yet strangely relatable. The German maestro returns to London for the first time since his sold out show at the Roundhouse in May of this year. In his early years, he would draw and dabble in painting, trying to capture if not a specific feeling, then the essence of something. An ideal. “Still, today, it’s the same feeling that drives me” Löffler explains. He started taking an interest in music at age 14, teaching himself to use a variety of programs and instruments, as well as develop his photography skills and collect a huge bank of field recordings, creating music simply because he enjoyed expressing himself. Since then, he founded label Ki Records, launching with debut EP “Heights” and subsequent album 2012’s “A Forest” and hasn’t looked back becoming one of the most in-demand electronic performers today with six self-released game-changing albums.
Magda’s touring schedule is among the most high-profile and demanding around with regular bookings at many of the world’s best house & techno clubs and festivals. She’s proved herself as a consistent, adventurous top-quality performer, with a knack for bringing tracks together in unexpected ways. Achieving accolades such as a BBC 1 Essential Mix and playing Timewarp’s live streamed 20th anniversary is not enough though, Magda will try her hand at whatever feels right from producing high-quality Tequila to tech collaborations, fashion and art. Like Perry, collaboration has become a vital part of Magda’s work.
In a UK exclusive, you get to experience both sides of underground stalwart Matthew Dear; as DJ innovator, and as improvised experimental techno artist; Audion. This alias allows him to slip out of his usual guise as a respected dance-music innovator with a finger always on-trend to exercise his dancefloor demons through grime-flecked minimalism to sinewy funk to relentless floor-fillers and back. But Audion’s core remains constant: an itchy forward momentum, an eye-popping visual aesthetic, and a dedication to high-class body music who has changed the landscape ever since subversive club anthem ‘Mouth To Mouth’ was unleashed in 2006.
No matter what sounds you profess to be your music of choice, chances are, that at some point, you have got your rocks off to Matt Edwards. Matt has many hats and personalities; something Perry has always prided himself on too. As Matthew E, he fashions club-based, dancefloor slayers. Rekid is his highly successful label and slower, more deliberate, rhythmical funk-driven alias of mid-week mayhem. However, it is his all-conquering, lead identity Radio Slave that encapsulates all these things and more, as his instantly recognisable nom de guerre and DJ persona; having held residencies at clubs including Panorama Bar (Berlin), Fabric (London), Cielo (New York), Space (Ibiza), and Rex Club (Paris).
Since his seminal debut album “Transsiberian”, Thylacine became the young electro prodigy making a real name for himself on the electronic scene and has since been building an fanatical following amassing over 120 million streams in the process. Whether it’s “Anatolia”, “Olatu”, or “War Dance”, Thylacine has made a name for himself by writing real hits and records that move you. He has developed a taste for composing through travel, each album that followed was always synonymous with encounters and discoveries. Thylacine combines music and image to navigate his world through travel and sonic voyage; something Perry and Etty are hugely passionate about and will be celebrating with the events.
Olof Dreijer is a highly revered producer, DJ, musician and member of legendary electronic band ‘The Knife’. He has been pushing the borders of electronic music for two decades; always keeping things fun and colourful. When he’s not been busy producing music, Olof has DJed throughout Europe at the most highly-respected clubs and international festivals. At the turn of 2010, Olof started working as Oni Ayhun, a secret pseudonym that explored experimental directions and played with gender. He is currently embarking on an exciting new recording journey signing to the legendary Hessle Audio label and releasing new single ‘Rosa Rugosa’. His DJ sets can traverse a tight mix of all kinds of grooves ranging from funky techno and melodic house to Baile Funk and Batida but always bringing the ‘dance’.
