Event Review: The One In The Woods 2022
One In The Woods is a still new but already impressive festival set in Hightown which is very easy to access and between Liverpool and Southport. It brings something all new to the Midlands in terms of dance music festivals as it offers a cross section of techno, house, drum & bass and jungle.
Stages were varied but always with punchy VOID sound. One was in the woods with trees all around, up in a wooden structure that was nice and organic. It is a stunning and naturalistic strain that really feels nice and hidden and secluded just like back in the old days of illegal raves.
But there is nothing illegal about this. We get down to powerful techno on a stage at the far end of the site with in particular Luke Slater dropping a real masterclass. We also enjoy a whole spectrum of sound on the third smaller stage which is always serving up different genes across the weekend. Pendulum delivered a great set to a baying crowd that shut down the DnB stage on Sunday night while a rich vein of local talent including KUSP, Andee J and Tom Page all played great sets
Food offerings were tasty and better than average, it was easy to access toilets and bars and the sound systems were beefy. Each kick was loud and clear, each hi hat crisp, each melody full of sonic richness. Add in some nice explosive production with fire, smoke machines and lasers and you had as much of a visual as an audible feast.
The whole event felt friendly and welcoming, from the staff to the punters, which is always going to be something that stands an event out. Talk around the site was that next year One in the Woods is going to be a three-day camping festival meaning it will be even bigger and broader in scope. We for one can’t wait.
