Citizenn’s Party Playlist
Citizenn is the moniker of London (via Nottingham) based artist Laurence B. Taking his name from a passing visual reference in the Manga film Akira. Citizenn originally arrived via releases on MadTech, the label owned by New Jersey house don Kerri Chandler, and since this release he has gone on to release records via labels including Culprit, &Friends, Mobilee Records, W&O Street Tracks, Kee Deep In Sound, and more.
Citizenn’s perception to making music is appreciated too, he has previously stated “I’m getting myself into that headspace where not every track has to be a banger, working with artists who are blowing up – vocalists,” he says, “pulling in all my influences and making it into a unified whole.”
Dance Rebels also got the opportunity to have a chat with him to celebrate the release of his EP via Saved Record, available HERE, and he revealed his party playlist, check it out below:
Rui Da Silva – Touch Me ft Cassandra I’d heard this song before I started DJing. At one point it was pretty ubiquitous. It was only when I found myself on the Dancefloor of Stealth (a club in Nottingham I grew up in) and had my first ebineezer experience that I would really hear this masterpiece. The filtered synth started to rise followed by the shakers and kick, the room is spinning now and the immortal lines rang out:”You’ll always be my baby…I’m always thinking of you baby”. I have no idea who played it out, things like that weren’t important to me at that point for whatever reason but I salute you. It’s one of those memories that still remains pretty vivid. Everyone has one, this is mine.
Roger Sanchez – Another Chance I was in london city airport one time waiting for my flight to Ibiza and The man himself was on the same flight I messaged my gf at the time fanboying and plucked up the courage to be like mate you’re massive inspiration etc etc. Bottled it didn’t I. Put this on instead and just stared longingly.
David Morales – Needin U This track always reminds me of the first season I went to Ibiza staying at Ocean Drive and trying (and failing) to persuade the hotel staff to let me have late check-out. Another icon of my formative music years.
Faithless – Insomnia The video for this track used to freak me out, mtv dance after school – wondering how sick it would be to have insomnia. I paid homage to it on my Mobilee release “I Can Stay Awake All Night”. Faithless are just one of those acts that canonised a moment for uk dance culture. Everytime that immortal synth line comes in I get weak.
T2 – Heartborken There was a time I couldn’t listen to this as all I could taste was sambuca, immediately. Stuck it on the other week and almost cried. This was certainly a moment for U.K music and still holds up. No cap.
Alice Smith – Love Endeavour (Maurice Fulton remix) Maurice Fulton is a genius. I was tempted to just write his name and leave it at that because so many of his tracks (consisting of a number of aliases) rank super high in my constantly shifting “best of all time” list.I first heard this track at a house party played by Matt Waites. And ever since have made a point of playing it at every house party, afterparty and informal gathering I found myself at. Tracks like this deserve to be celebrated.
Floating Points – Vaccum Boogie Afterparties, climbing over each other to put the next track on the youtube playlist. “are you sure you want to add this duplicate track to the playlist?” That feeling when you know you’re in good company.
Paul Woolford presents Bobby Peru – Erotic Discourse This is one of the first tracks that really blew my mind working the bar at Stealth Nightclub in Nottingham. Played by the man himself. on those funktion ones this sounded like the end of the world and the beginning of time all at once. Timeless.Dance.Music.
Len Faki – BTX 1 I heard this the first time I went to Berghain and it took my head off. So much subtlety and masterfull build. Everything about it is just perfect. I’d go as far as saying it’s probably my favourite techno record of all time. I can listen to it quite happily drinking tea or traversing the abyss without irony or coercion.
Bicep – $tripper The first release on the ever dormant Love Fever recordings where I first cut my teeth kinda sent ripples through the underground scene in london and set the stage for some of the best parties and experiences I’ve ever had. Cheers Matt and Andy.
