Louis The Child & Whethan Release Collaborative Mixtape “Honey”
Friends Louis The Child and Whethan combine forces on their new mixtape “Honey“. I just want to say, if you have been waiting for a LTC and Whethan collaboration like me, it’s finally here! Except instead of one song, we get 6 funky, bouncy, and all around good mood songs. I recently saw Louis the Child in Syracuse, NY on the Last To Leave Tour, and I was ready for whatever was coming next. Both artists have jumped around playing with different styles and sounds. That method makes for the unexpected and different. “Honey” is a collection and a prime example of each of each artists’ style, sound, creativity, and passion. That being said, let’s get to it!
“Chop It Up“: This song doesn’t wait around. The crunchy bass comes in quick with bright melodies ringing on top. The energy is already flowing as they music begins to build. The drop is well supported by a strong beat with lots of hats. As usual, the artists bring their catchy beat patterns into the mix. The bright rhythms on top are joined by an eerie melody, which has a really chill vibe. During breakdown, the melody changes to a nice vocal sound, adding to the feel good environment.
Into the second drop, that bass is still going. The vibrations give you the chills a bit, that’s how you know the bass is well made. You can really here the styles of Louis The Child and Whethan mesh really well in this song, which will get you hyped for the 5 other songs in this collab.
“Monkey Bars“: The bright chimes and light synth melody set the mood of the song immediately. The build up relaxes while the beat comes in. The drop is so well done in this song. The synths and drums combine to form a really full sound, and you can hear the alterations of the synths sweeping in the background. This combined with the interjections drums makes for a drop that has something unique going the entire time. Drops like these are the best, because they have a lot put into them, but the music isn’t too busy or overtaken by one instrument.
“Happy Birthday“: Of all the songs on “Honey“, this song is the one that is all about the happy moods. The synths are bouncy and catchy, the beat is timed well, and the bass is strong but also gives that goovy feel to the music. The melody puts you in such a good mood, and each time the instrument changes, you are drawn more into the song.
The last drop takes things up a notch with that extra bass to bring it all back. While stronger, the bass still brings that bounce, and the music doesn’t lose anything at all. This song is a reminder of why Louis The Child and Whethan make music, to make you feel good and bring you happy vibes.
“Drip Drip“. Here things get interesting. This uses both underlying bass, and crunchy bass, along with a heavy beat, to lead the song. The intro introduces us to a deep atmosphere, as the music gradually builds over it. The drop brings us heavy layer of sound, while arpeggios and well made synths set the final tone of the song. Though the instruments are very assertive, you can still feel the atmosphere of the song in the back. “Drip Drip” is a great show of how these artists can refine their sounds and instruments.
“Tengo Mas“: Now you may think before hearing this, that Tengo Mas is going to be their attempt at a Latin style song. And while the early intro might make you believe it… they still got you!! Immediately after the intro, the song takes huge turn. The horns the tweaked and drums change up. Then the environment echos and it turns into a very weird breakdown. Now I mean that in the best way possible, because that is what these guys do. They take a chance and use weird sounds and effects to set outside the box and it always sounds so cool.
At the same time they also took a popular style of music and put their twist on it. The second drop brings the different pieces they used together, along with a very interesting melody. You really see the creativity of the artists in this song.
“Synths With Bangs“: Unfortunately, this is the last song on the mixtape. But it’s okay, because this song is awesome! The environment is set in the intro of the song, and well patterned synths grow on top. synths interject in the building up, really giving the song a good feel. And then everything launches at the drop. The synths increase and gain a soothing depth to them. The the additional melodies in the background let the music fly over the beat. The bass makes heavy hits, which is such a nice part to the music. This is a song that makes you wanna just go for it and move. The energy created from the music and subtle and strong at the same time.
Louis The Child and Whethan have supported each other for while, and this mixtape finally see that support turn into full on collaboration with great ideas, great sound, and of course something that we haven’t heard before. I genuinely love “Honey” and there isn’t a song on there that I dislike. You can also see Louis The Child‘s live video on their Facebook for the mixtape, where they do some funny stuff too. Look out for new music from both artists on the upcoming soundtrack for the Fifty Shades Freed movie. And most importantly, check out “Honey” below!!
