The Chainsmokers – Memories… Do Not Open [Disruptor Records]
The Chainsmokers full length album, “Memories…Do Not Open,” received a tremendous amount of hype before it’s release. And rightfully so considering the duo’s rise to mainstream popularity and radio airplay. The album consists of 12 tracks, including the likes of “Paris,” “Something Just Like This,” and “The One” which were the three singles off the album. The album also features some extra star power from the likes of Coldplay and Florida Georgia Line, which add a different taste.
Instead of reviewing each song individually, I think an overall summary will suffice. Honestly, not their best work. This album had so much potential, and a fair amount was wasted. The Chainsmokers depart their more EDM oriented style in favor of current trends in pop music. However, there are a few bright spots. “Break Up Every Night” and “Young” are two of my personal favorite songs on “Memories…Do Not Open” and are the two tracks that are arguably the farthest from their older, EDM oriented style. Drew sings on six of the songs on the album and all of them are very solid. His lyrics and writing are incredibly catchy.
The Chainsmokers posted on Facebook describing each song and it’s meaning, which is a great read. Unfortunately, putting a meaning and description to each song doesn’t affect the listenability. Overall, the album isn’t outstanding, but has its bright spots and these bright spots outweigh the aspects that are lacking. “Memories…Do Not Open” does get me more excited from what we can see from the duo in the future. But for now, this will have to suffice. Take a listen down below and let us know your thoughts. Enjoy!
