Thursday Thoughts 034: CYA
Hey CYA, welcome to Dance Rebels! For those who don’t know who you are, where are you from? And how long have you been producing in the music industry for?
Hello Dance Rebels, we’re from Spain and we’ve been working on the music industry for over 10 years. Last year, we made the decision to work together on this new adventure called CYA.
There’s a lot of mystery surrounding CYA, all we seem to know is you’re a duo, even social media thought it was a Tom Staar & Kryder alias at first haha, so, how did you two originally connect to form CYA too? Is CYA short for anything too?
It’s amazing how people can be so creative guessing who we are, and it’s always an honour to be related with such great artists. We connected around 4 years ago on the club scene, we both had a lot in common and share a passion for music, so we decided to build our own studio and start working together.
What sacrifices did you have both to make to pursue your careers in the music industry? Do you do music full-time, or do you work other jobs to fund for studio equipment etc?
We both had to make sacrifices to make this work; the single we just released is only one little piece of all the work we’ve been done on the last months. And we feel blessed to get on a stage where we can spend our full time on music nowadays.
Your first career release has just happened; ‘Mistakes’, via Steve Angello’s ‘Size’ imprint. How did you feel when you first found out he’d signed the track? How did you originally connect with S-A too? Was it at Opium Barcelona, the first time he played the track live (according to 1001).
Steve’s first feedback on the track was amazing! We can still remember our initial reactions when Steve told us that he would like to sign ‘Mistakes’ to his label. We meet Steve few years ago in a show, and we’re lucky to have some friends in common in the industry, so when a friend of ours listened to ‘Mistakes’ he told us that if we could get to Steve he would love it. The first time the song was played in a show was by Steve in Malmö at BIG SLAP festival, but then later the impact at OPIUM was also amazing, when all the speculation on the production started.
What do you think the highlight of the track is too? The part of the track which makes ‘Mistakes’ special to you? How long had you been working on the project too?
It’s not easy to choose a highlight, but we always loved the intro where you can guess where the melody goes and imagine where it will take you… if we’re making ourselves clear. Hard to describe music with words… it’s about the feeling. The project it’s quite new but intense, we’ve been working on this for over a year now and this is only the start of our ambitious plans.
Bastian Bux also tweeted praise for you by stating you’ve ‘reinvented’ the ‘overground prog sound’. Do you think it’s important artists have their own signature ‘sound,’ and how would you define your own sound too?
It’s key to find your own sound because at the end is what makes the difference between artists, is what we love from the electronic music in general, there’s no limits on the human mind so there should be no limits on new sounds, rhythms. Everything that’s you create with love should have your own imprint. Hard to define our own sound, we’re not big fans of labels but we are making progressive, underground or not, it’s progressive.
The track has already gained support from artists including Pete Tong, Danny Howard, Third Party, Kryder, Max Vangeli and more too. So, as upcoming producers, how does this make you feel? Motivate you more? Or do you expect this kind of support due to all the effort put into your music?
It makes ourselves very proud, we’ve been playing some their songs for a while and it’s a motivation indeed to see that you get support from artists like them. Despite all the efforts we put on our music this kind of support is always unexpected, as nowadays there’s plenty of good artists that make great sounds that don’t get the chance to be on such powerful channels like Radio Shows or Internet platforms.
Apart from releasing ‘Mistakes’ you’ve also showcased your style on Kryder’s ‘Kryteria’ podcast, and the mix included a couple of ID’s, some personal mashups, and a apparent remix of Highly Sedated ‘Make Love’. When can fans expect to see more new music from CYA in the future? Anything sooner then we expect?
We hope to have some releases before the summer as we’ve been working hard on new stuff on the last few months, not only remixes but also some new songs that we’ll be able to announce very soon.
Finally, you’ve just accomplished many producers dream (releasing a track via Size), so, now, if you could collaborate with any artist on a new track, who would it be, and why?
We always wanted to collaborate with Cirez D or Steve Angello, there’s no other reason that he’s been an inspiration all over those years.
