Thursday Thoughts 032: Bas Ibellini – The Winter Social Festival
Hey Bas, welcome to Dance Rebels, please introduce yourself; where are you from? How long have you been a DJ/producer for, and what inspired you to pursue this career?
Hey, I’m Bas Ibellini. I’m a London based creative enthusiast. Music is my main anchor but I enjoy all mediums and expressions of frequency that we have access to in this incredible world we live in. DJ’ing spun off from collecting records at a young age and being in a musical household my entire life. I’ve been playing music out for about 16 years, however only in the last few years I’ve gotten a real taste for the touring life. Making and playing music brings me contentment, especially when you know your making other people happy.
As a producer, you predominantly produce tech-house, and have had releases on Secret Music, Tuskegee, Rebellion and Classic Music, but, what’s been your personal favourite release? Why?
My last EP on TUSKEGEE, which kind of went under the radar was probably my most exciting of the last few. 2 tracks were collaborations with a dear friend and very talented producer, SLF. I was able to fuse a different methods and genres; “Elef Be” shows my more techno side whilst “Start Don’t Stop” touches on my appreciation for Jazz.
2017 has only just started, and you’re already making the headlines; Richy Ahmed supported you as a ‘New Name For 2017’ via a new tune on BBC Radio 1 with Pete Tong, congratulations! Any idea as to when the track will be released etc? Do you have any releases planned soon too?
Thank you. Its a great honour to be in this position. Richy is one of hardest working and amazing people to be around. His music speaks for itself. I grew up on Pete Tong and his legendary Radio 1 show. I really hope I have the opportunity to have more of my own music showcased on in the future.
On Saturday the 11th of March, you’ll be making your debut at The Winter Social Festival! How excited for this event are you? What expectations do you have for the event?
I’m pretty thrilled, the line up is huge. Nic Fanciulli and his team are clearly putting a lot of time and effort into making these special events. I’m expecting some serious high energy from the crowd and heat from the artists to keep us warm.
As a DJ, how would you describe your typical DJ set? What makes you unique as a DJ when compared to others?
I always tell a story as long as its not an hour set where you have to bang it out. I somehow introduce myself without going off track from whoever is performing before (unless I have no choice), a middle with some peaks and troughs, and an outro to conclude my journey. The size, of the room, the sound system and lighting will all influence the night. I take everything into consideration to make the night the best experience possible.
Every DJ has a track that will always get played within their sets, like their ‘go to track’, so, what track can attendees at The Winter Social Festival definitely expect to hear from you whilst spinning at the event in March?
My new track “Life Break” is getting a lot of airtime at the moment. It’s a really fun track with a humorous synth that reminds me of a circus or kids playground.
Finally, if you could collab on a new track, with an artist who is also playing The Winter Social Festival, who would you pick? And why?
Paul Johnson. I’ve been playing his music for years. Tracks like the ones he’s put out on Dance Mania give a true insight into house music culture over the years.
