Thurdsay Thoughts 025: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Zulu Records
One hundred releases is an impressive number to hit, and Zulu Records just got there. The label has been home to many big names throughout their reign in the house music industry. The label has brought countless house hits to their wide fanbase ever since their founding in February 2012. We brought the geniuses behind the label, My Digital Enemy, on board to bring you ten facts about the label that you might not have known before.
1.It’s run by Brighton-based house heads My Digital Enemy!
2. We were the fifth top selling house label on Beatport in 2014.
3. We have been instrumental to some of the scenes most successful artists with releases from them before they exploded. Lucas & Steve, Prok & Fitch to name a few.
4. Our first release to gain serious traction was ‘Reaper’ by My Digital Enemy. Mark Knight championed it and ended up licensing the original for two toolroom compilations. Matteo DiMarr remixed it for Zulu and it got played by Axwell, Prok & Fitch, Dirty South and was our first big Beatport hit!
5. Duke Dumont is a big fan and still plays Peter Gelderblom & Randy Colle ‘Got To Be Good’ over two years after release. He recently tweeted us to say how much he likes the track.
6. My Digital Enemy ‘Wrong’ was licensed from Zulu to the Toolroom Ibiza compilation. It hit the No.1 spot on the Beatport House page and stayed there for 6 weeks. It was one of the best selling house tracks of 2013. We are releasing remixes in 2017!
7. We have another label called Vudu Records that delves into a deeper more underground tech house sound. Recent artists include Doorly, D.Ramirez, Armitage & of course My Digital Enemy.
8. One of our favourite moments was seeing Pete Tong play My Digital Enemy ‘Shamen’ at BBC Radio 1’s ‘Big Weekend’. He is a big supporter and has played many of our Zulu & Vudu Records releases.
9. We were the first label to be granted clearance from the legendary ‘Underworld’ for Matt Caseli & Terry Lex’s cover version of their amazing ‘Born Slippy .Nuxx’. It was one of our biggest releases in 2014 and Matt is working on a new version for 2017.
10. We have just hit our 100th release with My Digital Enemy & Kadian ‘Lives Again’. Danny Howard premiered it on his BBC Radio 1 show and it has also been played by Tiësto, EDX & Benny Benassi. There are exciting times ahead! We are looking forward to getting stuck into 2017!!
