The Final Word of 2016: Interview with Wasback
We are happy to close out 2016 by featuring a bright young talent from Italy who goes by the artist name, Wasback. This year has been incredibly kind to this DJ/producer, as he has made huge strides in his career with multiple high-profile collaborations and releases. His name now appears on the dance music industry’s top labels such as Maxximize Records, Protocol Recordings and Revealed Recordings. But, he’s still hungry for more. On the eve of 2017, we chatted with Wasback about what he’s learned and his musical career, his dream collaboration and much more!
Where do you find your inspiration as an artist?
I like to listen a lot of music, not only EDM, but even rock, pop etc.
I think that listening different kind of music is something that helps me so much in my productions, like to spend so much time on the DAW (software) and the idea grow while I’m simply working.
What experience in your musical career have you learned from the most?
I don’t have a specific experience that helps me, but it was a continuous thing, I always learned more from all collaborations, starting from that one with Magnificence, since the track with M35.
Every single collaboration has left me something at production level as well as a friendship with these guys. I can say I always worked with people who were in the music world from more time than me, so I learned something more than I surely knew.
How long does it typically take for you to make a track from start to finish?
It depends, every track has a story, often I need one or two days for the idea, and then 1 week to completely finish it, but it’s not always like this. For example, with “Let It Go”, I needed nearly one month, for “Magic” one month and a half. Most of time is needed for mix and master and to define the small details that label says. However, I think to be pretty fast.
You had a lot of high-profile releases packed into the second half of 2016. Is early 2017 just as busy?
Well, who knows?
I can only say that in the last months i worked so hard and i have a lot of tracks done… with producers that I follow from many time and I’m really so happy for this! I can’t wait to let you all hear!
What was it like to work with Mr. Black on “Magic” and M35 on “Let It Go”?
The opportunity to work with Mr.Black was great because he’s a very good producer, but also a really nice man. We’ve done at least 80% of “Magic” through Skype! I remember that was some days that we’ve finished the track, but I wasn’t so convinced about the drop, so I spent a lot of time to find the right catchy melody and I can say that I’m really happy and satisfied about this one!
The work with M35 was good, though he didn’t make this genre of music, but I can say that together we created a great track! To finish this track, we talked through Messenger. Mes and I know each other for a long time and the idea of a collaboration was yet in our mind, we only needed the right track and when I sent the first “Let It Go” demo, he liked it and we decided to finish it together!
Which artist would be your dream collaboration, and why?
One of my dreams is to collaborate on a track with David Guetta because is the first DJ I loved and his great music started my journey in the music world. Would be really important for me to collaborate with him.
A lot of dance music producers are moving towards creating full-length albums. Would you ever consider making one yourself?
…yes well, let me say that I’m thinking about it from sometime, but I’m waiting the right moment. Now I’m trying to build a name in the world, when I will ready it will be the first thing I will do!
What has it been like to see your records being supported by big names like Hardwell and Tiësto?
It was fantastic, incredible! They are 2 artists that I’m following from 4 years and I respect so much!
I remember that evening, I was at home and on 1001Tracklists I saw that Tiësto played “Let It Go” on his famous “Club Life”and I was so happy, then around 3-4 a.m. in the morning, some videos about his performance live in Moscow while he was playing my track arrived on my Twitter account, and I didn’t sleep anymore ahah…
What’s in store for Wasback now as 2016 comes to a close? Any secrets you can let us in on?
I’m working so hard on a lot of music, most of the tracks will be progressive, but I’m working on something different also, so let’s see what happen! 😉
