Youth Reigns Supreme: DJ Mag Top 100 2016 Results
As Amsterdam Dance Event kicks off, the dance music world first fixated on the Heineken Music Hall. There, the results for this year’s DJ Mag Top 100 revealed that Martin Garrix is the youngest ever Top 100 DJs champion.
Rising from No. 4 in 2014 to No. 3 in 2015, Martin Garrix finally leapfrogged both Hardwell and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike to stand atop the dance music world. The gentlemen Garrix passed finished at No. 3 and No. 2, respectively. These results are rather unsurprising given Mr. Garrix’s surging popularity. The “Animals” hitmaker matured significantly since that release, branching out into different genres with tracks like “In The Name of Love” (with Bebe Rexha) and pleasing his fans with seven tracks in seven days.
“It feels unreal to have won. I 100% did not expect it at all. I’ve had an amazing year, with awesome shows and amazing fans — I’m so thankful for their support. I didn’t even do a campaign, and it just shows how dope the fan-base is.”
– Martin Garrix, via official press release.
Mr. Garrix received his award from his mentor and “The Only Way Is Up” collaborator, Tiësto, who stayed steady in the No. 5 spot. As a result of his achievement, Garrix had the opportunity to showcase his skills in front of a packed house at Amsterdam Music Festival’s opening night. But, he was not the only one to grace the stage. Performances from the Highest Live Act (KSHMR), Highest Ranked Female DJ (NERVO), Highest House DJ (Oliver Heldens), Highest Climber (Swanky Tunes, + 70 spots), and the Highest Hard DJ (Angerfist) captivated the crowd.
The highest re-entry into the charts came from American duo The Chainsmokers in the No. 18 slot. The highest new entry is masked future bass master, Marshmello at No. 28. The only other new entry in the top 50 is Frenchman Florian Picasso at No. 38.
2016 marked the first year that the total number of votes cast eclipsed one million. The most votes came from the US, followed by India, Brazil, Mexico, Belgium, Netherlands, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Russia, China, Japan and beyond. DJ Mag also asked the voters for their reasons for voting: Music Style (36%), 28% for DJ Skill and 24% for Production Ability. Only 3% stated they voted for a DJ because of their popularity, and only 6% due to showmanship.
