Thursday Thoughts 020: Get to Know South African Artists with Hendrik Joerges
Not many people think of South Africa when they think of electronic music. But, with the wonderful capabilities of the Internet, the dance music trend has gone global. However, there are many South Africans working tirelessly to make their names in industry saturated with many Europeans. There’s no better way for us to get an introduction to this sphere of the dance music world than from a native South African himself in the form of Hendrik Joerges. The Durban-based youngster recently topped the Johannesburg-based 5FM’s Dance Top 10 at 10 chart and number 2 on 5FM’s national Pop chart with his remix of Rain by Mark Stent, Pascal & Pearce and featuring Astryd Brown. With a touring schedule full of gigs, and plenty of new music to come, he now gives us his five South African artists to watch.
D.Know – “Nowcheckit”
D.Know is one of my favourite techno artists in South Africa, and he definitely deserves more attention than what he is receiving. In my opinion, he’s the best techno producer in South Africa.
Chee – “Consequences”
I only recently discovered Chee and although he does have a few 1000 followers on SoundCloud, he needs a LOT more attention. The track will speak for itself. I’m not surprised it was featured on Noisia Radio, because in my opinion he isn’t far behind them, production-wise.
Garcon – “Ethanet”
I’ve known Ethan (aka Garcon) for quite a few years now, but he has really moulded into his deep house persona over the last year. This track is a must-listen for everyone who enjoys deep house.
Walshingtin – “Anti Pop Music”
Walsh is one of the best deep house producers in the country, both in terms of production and composition, and there is no denying that. He deserves a lot more recognition than what he is getting.
Mogey – “It’s You”
Mogey has been killing it in South Africa lately. One of the nicest guys you’ll meet as well. This is my favourite track of his, because of how unique it is.
Hendrik Joerges has two new singles that dropped as part of Das Kapital‘s Overtime compilation on Do Work Records. Check out “Swamp,” “Banana” and the rest of the compilation below!
