The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey – Closer [Interscope Records]
The Chainsmokers simply cannot be stopped. Their huge 2016 rolls on with “Closer,” alongside singer-songwriter Halsey.
I was lucky enough to see this track played live when the duo headlined a show at Syracuse University, where Andrew Taggart (one of the two Chainsmokers) went to school. The American hitmakers follow up the successes of “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Inside Out” with another big single.
The track is unbelievably catchy. It starts off with vocals from Andrew Taggart himself. The radio-friendly lyrics are paired with a generous helping of softer synths and drums. The whole track mellows out as the bridge comes into play, but the buildup starts up pretty quickly. Rolling snares bring in a melodic, trap-influenced climax. It’s almost like a more refined version of “Roses”. Halsey joins in on the second verse, before combining vocals with Taggart. This record brings real emotion to the table, and demonstrates the deft musical prowess of The Chainsmokers and Halsey.
