Hardwell & Thomas Newson – 8Fifty [June 13 – Revealed Recordings]
Most people would find being stuck on a bus with the same people for 10 days to be a hell on earth. We don’t know if they thought it was hell, but at least the bus provided the perfect studio for Hardwell and Thomas Newson to create their first ever collaboration. “8Fifty” will be the second ID of many debuted at Ultra Music Festival by Hardwell to be released via his Revealed Recordings imprint. Hardwell has already had an impressive 2016, releasing collaborations with Afrojack (“Hollywood”) and Kura (“Calavera”), as well as a massive single titled “Run Wild”. It has also been a productive year for Thomas Newson, with tracks like “Wildfire,” “Home Is Where The Heart Is” (w/ Asonn) and a remix for Galantis‘ “Louder, Harder, Better” joining an already impressive discography. This first, but hopefully not last, collaboration between the two Dutchmen is set to drop on June 13.
From listening to this teaser, it really comes as no surprise that “8Fifty” was produced by Hardwell and Thomas Newson. You can really hear the strengths of both producers, and they come together in a very explosive way. The breakdown kicks off with a rather subtle melody, but that’s really the only dose of subtlety you’ll find on this entire record. The melody is just a simple pluck synth at first, before exploding into a full-on set of chords that comes at you from all angles. The producers then bring “8Fifty” into an extended breakdown with a reggae vocal taking over the diminished instrumental. They loop the end of his chorus in tandem with rolling snares as the drop comes closer. This drop is for those who like a lot of bass, as Hardwell and Thomas Newson bring a gargantuan bassline with screaming Dutch house synths for a festival-ready drop.
