Thursday Thoughts 004: Our Interview with David Julien
David Julien took the time to talk with us about his recent collaboration, “Nobody But You,” with WildOnes. He is a singer from the UK, and was a finalist on The Voice UK. David Julien is fairly new to the electronic scene, as his first song was a track with Jumbo P titled “I Feel You”. He also has collaborated previously with WildOnes, with that tune going by “You Dancing”. So far, he is loving it. David Julien has a great high voice, and accompanies these songs perfectly. Here is what he had to say about the process, his growing career and EDM.
Tell me about the process of making and recording “Nothing But You”.
In this instance (as every collab project is different), WildOnes sent me a basic idea/demo of the backing track, so it was a matter of getting a feel for it and feeling where they were coming from and then putting my slant on it, feeling the emotional drive and trying different routes within that – sending back lyrical and melody ideas basically what the song is about (it’s content) then discussing together that initial collab and establishing its foundation. From there this embryonic idea goes back and forth between us and grows into a massive hit!
How did this process compare to “You Dancing”?
It was relatively the same process, with more of a learning curve as it was the first time we’d worked together and it was a matter of getting to know each other’s personalities, musical styles, and work ethic and how far we can creatively push each other without pissing one another off – very much like having a new girlfriend. It definitely happened faster with ‘Nobody But You’. We created a really good relationship with ‘You Dancing’ and were ready to get going with the new track when the idea came.
What is it like to work with WildOnes?
It’s cool as there’s a strong mutual respect between us – they’re very thorough and pay great attention to detail and always exploring how the song could be different / better so I’ll receive a mix which is different to what I was expecting from my end. This can be challenging! But it’s kind of fun at the same time to see where they want to move the goal posts.
You make much calmer music on your own, what made you decide to sing for an EDM song?
I’ve always had an interest in Dance music but never really fully thought of it as a career move, but then I started getting requests from DJ/Producers wanting my voice and collaborating. WildOnes was one of the first and my voice and its range really worked/works well with Dance so it became a pretty obvious avenue to pursue and I’m loving it.
Do you want to do more EDM singing? Do these songs affect where you would like to take your singing career?
I have no option at the moment. I’m inundated with requests and I haven’t stopped writing/singing on collabs, I’m enjoying working with Enhanced, they’re great guys and really enjoying the EDM scene that I’m now engrossed in, it’s brilliant for getting my name & voice to the masses and furthering my career. I’m happy to go with the flow for as long as it takes.
Have you ever tried producing and EDM on your own, or have you been inspired to try?
I’ve done a little electronic music, and I’d love to have a bash at EDM but I don’t have the time just yet or the equipment and to be honest I’m not very techy and can’t emulate the sound(s) that well, I’m good with melodies, top lines, chord structures, etc. So that parts fine. But these EDM guys are amazing!
Is there anything else you’d like to say or anything you are working on that we should look forward to?
I am working on other projects, from all over the place like Amsterdam, Sweden, Portugal, Poland, Egypt, Russia, some completed, some waiting for final mixes. It always seems to take too much time though from writing – mixing to label pitching/delivery – so I’m having to choose carefully. Now that requests that come in, it’s a matter of balancing between what I like creatively and what I need financially. All being well there should be another three maybe four releases this year.
David Julien certainly appears to be the vocalist of choice for WildOnes, so we can definitely expect to hear more from him going forward. You may not know it, but major dance music labels like Protocol Recordings, Armada Music, Revealed Recordings and more have enlisted his help as a songwriter.
Special thanks to David Julien, Enhanced Music, Carl Marcantonio and Formidable Management!
