Josh Wink – Denial [Ovum Recordings]
Josh Wink has dropped an EP consisting of “four” tracks full of gnarly, dark, techno. The reason I put “four” in parentheses is that it is all technically one track, imagined three different ways with an acapella at the end. The Eyes Closed Original Mix is that leadoff with a deep bass line, subdued percussion, and the vocal track mixed quite loudly overtop. Trance-inducing techno at its finest to say the least, but also a really interesting combination of instruments, and influence from minimal house. The bass-line is spot on and sounds really good through nice speakers. Sparse chords that float overtop the main instruments throughout the track also add a nice touch and contribute to the ambience. Overall however, things get old kind of quickly and, unfortunately, that continues across the whole EP. Not much is done with the Tweak Dub, the D’acid mix is a bit more flavorful and I like how the bass-line sounds grimier, and the futurepella is just an acapella track. Give these tracks a listen, and decide which if any belong in your library.
