Slam – Catacoustics (Gary Beck Remix) [Soma Records]
Gary Beck’s remix of Catacoustics is absolutely top notch techno that will bring you back to a dark, dingy club somewhere under the railroad tracks of a large city. Heavy, intense, and trance-inducing, Beck uses that classic kick-hat combination to drive the track forwards. In many ways, these percussion instruments, specifically the kick, are the main focuses of the track. They are complimented in many ways by the synths and other effects surrounding them, but it’s the kick that really gives the track energy and a sense of movement. For example, the bass-line, although subtle, surrounds the kick drum and compliments the constant booming with a rhythmic styling that gives the track more depth and gives it a really steady groove. I also really enjoyed the use and the tone of the heavily reverbed synths above the track. Although a bit repetitive at times, it gives the track that trance-inducing effect that I was speaking about before. It also sounds so incredibly smooth.
Definitely give this track a listen if you’re a techno fan. It sounds really really good. Oh and Beatport changed their website so you can FINALLY listen to whole tracks on there.
