Squire – City Cemetery / Midnight Gardens [Rebellion]
For those of you still at Berghain, here is a new tech house release by Squire that is a unique addition to anyone’s library. Staying on the lower end of tech house BPMs, these tracks are deep and minimalistic and feature sparse instruments with a combination of spoken-word and sung vocals. The vocals are very hit or miss, but also are an interesting addition to the track and give it a late-night kind of vibe. These tracks are also very space-age and use very avant-garde instruments that, while they lack a catchy kind of melody or idea to them, lend the tracks an even more spacious feel. That being said, not much stands out in terms of good listening with these tracks. They aren’t very memorable, and tend to sound too similar to each other to be considered top-notch.
City Cemetery/Midnight Gardens is out-there. Very odd, hard to swallow, but also a very interesting and unique style. Tech house fans should check it out but those who aren’t a fan of the genre already will most definitely not be won over by this release.
