Rich Wakley – Time To Jack EP [Definition:Music]
Wakley’s “Time To Jack EP” is a collection of tech house tracks with a classic sound, and modern ideas. The first original, Time To Jack, is retro in its stylings. The percussion is old school and has that classic kick-clap combination that house is famous for, the synths are styled so that the track sounds like old school jack house, and together they create a really satisfying throwback to house tunes of the nineties. What’s nice is that Wakley doesn’t doctor up the track at all and keeps everything as an homage rather than a reimagining. Many DJs nowadays still prefer to spin tracks from that time period and Wakley’s fits in with those very well. Throwin’ Shapes takes things to a new era, but still references some of the house sounds of old. On one hand, the synths are classic house with an almost acid vibe to them. They’re a bit thin, and they lack a bit of power, but Wakley layers them with some nice reverb, and then squashes in an absolutely massive bass-line underneath. This is where the old school meets the new. The bass-line will rumble through your speakers with incredible force and is the real standout of the track.
Both of these originals are very well done and will be good for those who would like a bit more of the classic house sound in their library. The remixes are also well done, and Raffa did an especially good job on Time To Jack. Give this EP a listen, and a vote with your dollar if you’d like.
