Shanahan – Powercat [Dubbed Records]
Sometimes, the eyes of the mainstream dance music society are just in the wrong place. American Shanahan is doing just about everything possible to make sure he gets the credit he is due. After having a strong start to his career under his full name, an identity change and an infinite source of motivation caused him to rocket back into mainstream relevance. One of the first pieces of evidence of his effort was a track called “RIFTN” through Dubbed Records, and he now returns to the label of JoeySuki with “Powercat”. The latest from Shanahan is definitely a departure from the lighter and more melodic sound he employed on his past two releases on Trice Recordings (now known as Armada Trice). This track is all about the sheer power of the bassline, but also a careful attempt to avoid the potential for big room monotony. This crisis is successfully averted through intricate synth work through out the drops, and a melody in the middle that is on top of it’s game. Just from listening to “Powercat,” it becomes easy to realize how Dannic, Jordy Dazz, and Paul Oakenfold got on board with this tune.
