David Guetta & Kaz James – Blast Off [Jack Back Records]
What does one say about a track like Blast Off? Or rather, what can one say about a track as unremarkable as Blast Off? I can say this: it most definitely is an audio file on Beatport. When I download it and click on it, it opens in iTunes and then I can listen to it. So yeah, I guess that’s pretty sweet. It even comes with little album art that pops up on my iPhone when I play it. Let’s start with the lyrics:
I’m not one to expect much from house music lyrics. I get that most people aren’t listening. All I ask is that you refrain from completely giving up and put in at least a little bit of effort. The lyrics go as such:
“This is a blast off
It’s time to blow this up
So best you run for cover!
We about to hit self destruct
Go all my people with me
And none of us give a fuck
So put those hands up higher
Let’s smash this party up
So put those hands up higher”
(Thank you MetroLyrics for letting me not have to type that up). Let alone the stupendously stupid sentence structure, I’m pretty sure that they really shouldn’t be saying these things in a song. Self destructing inside a club is definitely against the rules and in general kind of a jerk move. I don’t know what they were going for. Maybe they said:
David: “Ooh, let’s name this track “Blast off” because it sounds like a jet engine during the drop”
Kaz: “Yeah dude that’s mad chill. Oh but wait we have to have vocals in it because people can’t remember what the track actually sounds like because there really isn’t a melody or anything at all to remember it by except for that one sample that we didn’t write.”
David: “Oh crap you’re right. Let’s just write some stuff down real quick I have to release this song now.”
Kaz: “But David, it’s not done!”
David: “It’s done enough I guess. Who cares anyway?”
But come on…give us a little more David. We get it! You’ve been doing this a long time! You’ve been getting crap for selling out for the past 5 years! You’re tired! We’re sorry! But everything you release under your name will literally exist forever. Do you want this in the archive of David Guetta songs? Even Led Zeppelin had their bad days, but they had to record music with wooden sticks and clay pots because it was the dark ages. You make it on your laptop. You have the internet. Why not just scrap it and maybe wait to see if the idea evolves to something better?
Also, planes and buildings in the album art? Really? The song is about self destructing, and you put planes broken smoldering buildings on the cover? I don’t know what you’re trying to say, or what the point here is, but maybe you should use a different combination next time…those two are a bit…touchy…
Oh yeah the song’s not great. Doesn’t do much really.
