Behind The Scenes With Dyro [Dance Rebels Exclusive Interview]
Can you describe the craziest or weirdest thing that has happened to you as a DJ?
Wow (laughs). I always find that a really hard question because since I started touring it’s been crazy. Three years ago when I first started breaking through my entire world changed. I was still in school, I was studying, just like a normal kid and all of a sudden my world changed, so I see everything as crazy you know? Weird stuff happens though like girls throwing their bras at you. That’s probably one of the weirder things (laughs).
That can’t be too bad!
Not at all (laughs).
We haven’t heard too many collaborations from you. Most of your work is comprised of originals and remixes. How come?
I’m definitely really picky on who I collaborate with. I usually only work with people that I really respect or people that I think I can genuinely learn something from in the studio. I don’t really want to collaborate with people just because they have a bigger fan base or something or because they want a lift in their fan base. It’s just not who I am. That’s probably the biggest reasons for the lack of collaborations, but I am working on something with Dannic at the moment and another one with Hardwell as a follow-up to “Never Say Goodbye” so there will be a couple out soon.
So your new stuff will be mostly with Revealed artists?
Yeah, because most Revealed artists are pretty well respected. Me and Dannic have been talking about doing a collaboration together forever and I think we started last year in June or July and we really want to release it within a year.
When did you feel like you really made it?
Honestly I still don’t feel like I’ve made it. I’m still working really hard every day and and there’s so much competition, so I just work my ass off every single day. I just make a lot of new songs, try to make the best sets, try to make the best edits and mash-ups to spice things up, but there hasn’t been a moment where I’ve felt like I really made it and I can just relax. It was cool to be ranked #30 [DJ Mag Top 100], but that was more of a recognition confirmation. That told me I’m on the right path and that I should work even harder at this.
I think you were one of the highest rank new entries ever!
I haven’t really looked into it that much, but yeah it was really cool.
So you’ve been touring with Hardwell and Dannic and these guys are your best friends. It must be crazy, do you have any good tour stories?
Yeah man it’s so much fun to be touring with your friends. We’re like brothers. Imagine you’re three best friends get together and you guys go on a bus tour and play every big show in the world. It’s a dream for a lot of people and for us we’re actually living that dream, so it’s like a blessing every single day. Last year in Canada that was my very first tour ever so I didn’t really know what was crazy and what was not because everything was new to me (laughs). This year we’ve had some crazy stuff happen though, we played a lot of haunted venues. We did one in Niagra Falls and the craziest shit happened. Sometimes the power fails, but everything goes out, not just one CDJ. That never happens! Hardwell was playing and it’s all digital, but for some reason they were skipping. Everything should be flawless, I mean even when you use CDs that doesn’t usually happen, but it just kept happening on a digital USB stick and it’s just not possible. That was freaking weird.
What influences your music?
It really depends on whether or not I already have an idea. If I do, I start with the idea. It could be a melody, a loop, or a drum fill which I usually have in my phone. Later on I listen to it and it comes back into my mind and I start from there. If I don’t have an idea or inspiration, I’ve taught myself to be really productive and just start with technical things like drums and sound design. That’s the two ways I go about it.
Are there any new artists out there that you think are really good? Anyone on Revealed that we should look out for?
Well the good thing about Revealed is that Hardwell is really a good platform for growing. He has a knack for finding talented people and there’s a lot of really talented people on Revealed. The new generation just keeps on going. I might have been from like two or three generations back, so to see new artists come up is a new thing for me. It’s really cool to watch and there’s a lot of really good up and coming guys like Merk & Kremont.
Do you have any plans to do something like Front of House TV?
I’m actually already doing that. It’s called Dyro’s Diaries and the first episode was back in January. It kind of went through how I came up, me in the studio, and focused on me winning the #30 spot in the DJ Mag Top 100. We’re working on the second episode right now which covers the history from Miami.
What is something that you think fans would want to know about you that they don’t know or something that is a misconception about you?
I try to show more personality with Dyro’s Diaries. I mean I get a lot of tweets that I might be a dick or something. A lot of people look at me and say like oh he’s a dick because he’s a big DJ and he doesn’t reply to my tweets or whatever, but I really don’t see myself as being a dick. I really try and take time out for the fans and I take pictures with everyone who wants one. Sometimes I might be having a bad day, but I really respect my fans and I love them a lot. I thank them for everything I have. Basically what I want to show my fans is that I love my them and they mean everything to me.
