Florian Frings – Backspace [Minus]
A blend of spacey minimal house/techno, Backspace is an ambitious EP that works best as a piece of music that you listen to all of the way through. Each track consists of a few things: wild synths making spacey sounds, loud bass-lines that pound through your speakers, a heavy kick drum, and varying percussion. If you take a listen to this EP, you can tell that it must have been meant to be listened to in one sitting as each track sounds very similar to the next one. In fact, they use almost the exact same instruments track-to-track. An interesting concept for a dance music release, but ultimately leads to the music being rather unfulfilling. Minimal house can be great in certain situations, but one of the many downfalls of the genre is repetition and unfortunately Backspace does not do enough to break up the monotony. Give this EP a listen, decide for yourself, and if you like it, vote with your wallet.
