Mercer Throws It Down At Prime Boston
The crowd makes the party and after witnessing the Mercer show at Prime I now believe in that statement even more. I’m getting ahead of myself though so I’ll start at the beginning. Prime is a swanky night club located in downtown Boston, perfect real estate for attracting young professionals and college students. It’s definitely more upscale and mature than some of the clubs in Cambridge, but you also pay a lot more for parking if you bring your car and drinks are nearly twice the price. As far as I know most events there are 21+ so it’s a totally different experience than going somewhere that’s 18+.
It’s not a huge place, you could fit maybe 300-400 people in there if you really pack the room and the DJ booth is right on top of the dance floor so you get a great view of whoever is playing. The lights and sound system are okay, nothing to write home about which is a little surprising considering they have Nexo, JBL, and QSC speakers. If you’re VIP there’s an upper level with another bar and more space that could hold maybe another 200 people.
The night started off somewhat slow, but Bamboora worked the deep house to settle everyone in. After about an hour or so he cranked things up a notch and went into “Got Me Thinkin” by Don Diablo and CID which got everyone away from the bar and onto the dance floor. From there he just kept the hits coming, I mean there was no room for the photographers to walk around that’s how crowded the dance floor was. Bamboora is a local Boston DJ that opens for quite a few of the NV Concepts shows and he really seemed to understand what the crowd wanted. In my opinion he’s an extremely underrated dude and I was very impressed with his performance. By the time Mercer was ready to go on the crowd was all good to go.
The night slowly went downhill from there, but it wasn’t because of Mercer. He did a great job with his mixing and varied his musical selections quite a bit even getting in some punk rock. The crowd lost their edge around 1:00am though and didn’t seem to be into some of the edgier stuff he played like the DJ Snake remix of “Thriller” by Michael Jackson which just blew me away. From that song he went into a bit of a trap set, but the crowd didn’t really go all that wild. When Borgeous played a trap set at Naga people went wild so it was interesting that at a club just a few miles away the same type of music wasn’t as effective. The mute crowd may not have been rocking out, but I loved it and at any other venue I think he would have blown the roof off the place. It kind of sucks that Mercer wasn’t able to experience just how wild Boston can get, but I’m sure if he comes back we can do a little better. It wasn’t a terrible show by any means, but a 75% full room filled with a laid back crowd isn’t exactly the formula for a wild night. I got a chance to meet up with Mercer at the end of the night and he was very nice and took pictures with a few fans, but it was great to see how humble he was even after all the success he had in 2013. I wish him all the best as he begins to tour more frequently in the US and can’t wait to see him tear it up at other venues.
