deadmau5 and Wildstylez Clash On Twitter Over Song Similarities
We’ve seen it before, and we’ll probably see it again: artists disagreeing over the line between inspiration and theft in music. We saw it last week between StadiumX, Dimitri Vangelis, Nicky Romero, and Steve Angello regarding the track “Howl At The Moon,” and our second edition of EDM Twitter Drama features Canadian producer and social media loudmouth deadmau5 and Dutch hardstyle producer/DJ Wildstylez.
Wildstylez posted a link to purchase his newest single “Straightforward” back on January 29, but it took the Canadian until today to catch wind of a melody in the track’s striking similarity to his hit “Some Chords” from 2010.
@wildstylez @hardstylecom cool rip bro. cool.

The Dutch producer tried to defend his actions, claiming his inspiration came from another song, but deadmau5 was on the offensive.
@deadmau5 heard this on the radio right before I started the track http://t.co/crgDWT2d8T
But thanks anyway.

@wildstylez cool story. why dont you just rip that off too? making music is hard.

After Wildstylez attempted to politely disagree, the rarely-filtered deadmau5 said exactly what he felt (and did not leave out profanities):
@wildstylez go fuck yourself. seriously. yes, i am, in fact, taking credit for the melody i wrote. Are you telling me its yours?

Fellow hardstyle artist Atmozfears tried to intervene to save his friend, but it was to no avail:
@deadmau5 @wildstylez since when is a combination of chords claimable as your melody dr. professor music /moving along

According to deadmau5, this all falls under copyright infringement:
@HardWithSling its called a copyright. its called IP. thats fuckin how.

Well? You be the judge:
(Wildstylez has removed the radio edit to “Straightforward” from his SoundCloud page.)
