Joey Dale – Shockwave/Watcha Called Me [February 24 – Revealed Recordings]
After being named one of the top DJs to watch by Hardwell in an earlier interview, Rotterdam native Joey Dale is about to get his career kickstarted by Revealed Recordings. He follows in the footsteps of Julian Calor, who previewed his Typhoon/Storm EP, and will release his own two-track EP. This marks Joey’s first worldwide solo release, after he did “Ready For Action” together with Alvaro. “Shockwave,” the second track listed on the EP, was first played in ID form in the second hour of Hardwell On Air 150, and has a B-side partner titled “Watcha Called Me”. The two-track EP will be released on Revealed Recordings on February 24.
“Shockwave” is big-room top-to-bottom, from start to finish. Luckily, the sound isn’t too recycled, as we have heard some tracks in the past that sound almost identical. A mysterious reverse reverb leads us into the melody, which is simple but effective. As the drop approaches, there is a chopped up vocal sample, which then brings on the big-room kick. The kick is quite familiar (sampled from “Flute” by New World Sound & Thomas Newson), and the synth stab pattern has been used a few times. Of course, the Pryda snare is in there to keep things fresh. While this track isn’t exactly the most original, it is definitely a good way for Joey Dale to electrify the dance music world.
The second track on the EP is called “Watcha Called Me”. It bears a few hallmarks to “Shockwave,” however is definitely deserving of the second slot on the EP. The melody is actually quite unique, but the level of uniqueness goes down at the track progresses. The drop features the same kick as “Shockwave,” but has a stronger house vibe than big-room. Of the two tracks on the EP, I think “Watcha Called Me” is much more powerful in a DJ set.
As mentioned before, both tracks will be released on February 24. Until then, enjoy!
