The Chainsmokers Invade Naga Cambridge
Wednesday nights are not particularly thrilling nights most of the week, but when The Chainsmokers are in town it changes things quite a bit. Last night I had the opportunity, courtesy of our awesome friends at 4AM, to experience the duo of Alex Pall and Drew Taggart blow the roof off Naga. From the moment I arrived there was a buzz in the air and people were genuinely excited to be at the show, there was even a few people waiting in line who didn’t know The Chainsmokers that were quickly informed by avid fans about how “amazing” they are.
Though getting in took a little longer than expected it was nice to see a packed venue with roughly 400-450 people in the club already vibing to the opening DJ. Naga did it right with the lighting and sound. It was nice and dark with some great laser effects and just a few wash lights. The powerful sound system was cranked nice and loud and the banging bass kept the crowd going from start to finish. Starting off with a few tracks of their own The Chainsmokers stayed true to their style and dropped some awesome indie remixes and stayed away from the more generic tunes like “Animals”, “Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat”, and “Turn Down For What” which was very refreshing. Some crowd favorites included their remixs of “Habits” and ‘We Own The Night”, “Dyanmite” by Quintino, and “Lunatic” by Mercer and DJ Snake, but by far the most popular song of the night was “#Selfie”. Drew rocked the mic at all the appropriate times and watching the entire club take a selfie right before the drop was pretty insane. The only hiccup of the night was a brief period where the music cut off, but of course a USA chant was started and kept the energy going until they resolved the issue with the sound system.
Depsite the fact that The Chainsmokers just signed their first single to a major label my favorite thing about these guys is how humble they are. After the show they stuck around to talk with fans and take pictures, a nice gesture from them, and even took shots with some people. It’s great to see that their success hasn’t gone straight to their heads (cough Carnage cough cough), they’re the same dudes that send the best and funniest emails in the business. If you want to go to a show where you can experience music that’s actually new and get that underground vibe there is no better duo to see than The Chainsmokers. They most definitely get an A+ from us and if they’re playing in your town we highly recommend buying some tickets to hear them play.
