Hardwell & Friends @ Pier 94 [December 28]
We had the pleasure of attending one of the biggest events of the year. Hardwell, Dannic, Dyro, Paris & Simo, and Sick Individuals at Pier 94 in New York City as part of Hardwell‘s North American tour. The party was rocking for over 8 hours, nonstop music, it was crazy.
New York native duo Grand & Warren opened things up with a deep/tech house oriented set. They kept it somewhat mellow, but had some banger sprinkled in between. They closed with their own song “Tres” which was the biggest song in their set. It was a very mellow set, but great nonetheless.
Paris & Simo quickly took over and absolutely rocked it. They used a lot of vocals over the course of their set. When they dropped their collab with Merk & Kremont, “Tundra,” everybody went crazy. But, as I said, they used a lot of vocals, almost every song had vocals over it. As their set progressed they started dropping bigger songs to get the crowd hyped up for Dannic. They played a massive bootleg, presumably their own, of Zombie Nation‘s “Kernkraft 400” which got the crowd going nuts.
Dannic opened his set up with what sounded like a intro edit of his track with Sick Individuals,”Blueprint,” although it didn’t drop into “Blueprint.” Although, he did start his set off with a bang. A few songs in he dropped his remix of “Intense” which dropped into TJR‘s “What’s Up Suckaz” at the second drop, it was definitely a surprise and he then proceeded to put Justice‘s “We Are Your Friends” acapella over “What’s Up Suckaz.” Dannic‘s set never slowed down, he continually dropped banger after banger, especially “Solar (Working Title)” which he played with 3LAU & Paris & Simo‘s “Escape” acapella and when he played “Blueprint” the whole crowd went crazy. Dannic played a solid amount of ID’s to keep the crowd constantly guessing.
Dannic then made way for the #1 DJ himself, Hardwell. By the time Hardwell came on, there were already at least 5,000 people packed into Pier 94. He surprised the entire crowd by starting off with his “Spaceman” intro edit, which is something we haven’t heard since his set at Dream Valley. He then dropped the ever popular W&W mashup, “Thing Called Spaceman.” He also dropped Clockwork‘s mashup of Deorro‘s “Yee” with Krewella‘s “Alive” acapella. But, between those he played Mike Hawkins & Toby Green‘s massive collaboration “We Got This.” After the crowd went crazy for the Clockwork mashup, he kept the excitement going with Calvin Harris & Alesso‘s amazing song “Under Control.” Hardwell dropped a good amount of ID’s as well including one titled “Bigfoot” which has many people speculating about who it may be. He also played Showtek‘s huge new original “We Like To Party” and Bingo Players‘ “Rattle” to commemorate the recently deceased Paul Bäumer. He then played his collaboration with W&W, “Jumper,” which he dropped into “Welcome To The Jungle” which had a “Welcome To New York Bitch” vocal stab before the drop. Hardwell always brings a ton of energy to wherever he performs, and Pier 94 was no exception. We expected a lot from the #1 DJ in the world and he definitely delivered with his massive set.
Hardwell brought Dyro out when he closed with their collaboration “Never Say Goodbye,” and Dyro took over from there and continued with the madness. He dropped some of his classic songs, like “Leprechauns & Unicorns” and his remix of Tommy Trash & The Aston Shuffle‘s “Sunrise (Won’t Get Lost)” But, Dyro also dropped a few ID’s. He continued the madness and high level of energy that Hardwell had brought on until 3:00 AM. Playing after Hardwell is a hard task, but Dyro does it so well because he can build on the already high levels of energy.
Sick Individuals had the tougher task of closing the event. They played extremely popular “Lights of Neon” and their collaboration with Axwell, “I Am.” It’s always a tough task to close out an event, especially when you play from 3:00 to 4:00 AM, but they kept things interesting until the final moments. They played an ID of theirs as well as a few more. It was a great ending to an amazing event.
