Paji, Basti Grub – Six O Clock E.P. [Kittball]
German producer Paji has dropped a great E.P. (his first own release) consisting of three tracks: two original, and one a remix by Basti Grub. Six O Clock E.P. is a fresh mix of real and synth, and Paji’s experience in the world of violin and classical music really comes out in both of his tracks.
Six O Clock is a groovy tune with heavy strings overtop a riffing classical guitar. Underneath, a deep bass-line pumps through your speakers adding real power to the track. While the instruments sound incredible and the melodic stylings are unique and fresh, the real draw of the track is the mood that Paji creates using everything together. It’s deep, brooding, and takes you to a far away place when you’re listening to it. Top notch producing and creativity at its finest.
Viola is an upbeat piece that is a bit more electronically focused. Paji’s use of light chords and bass-line really put emotion into the track and gives Viola a lot of character. I also really enjoyed the breakdown, especially the strings overtop the chords and how it changes the feel of the track. Side by side, Viola and Six O Clock contrast each other in a really interesting way and show Paji’s range of skill in producing. Both tracks are unique and great listens, worth a buy on their own.
Finally, Basti Grub provides a remix for Six O Clock that’s quite tech-y and a far cry from Paji’s sound. It’s an interesting addition and is definitely a creative take on the original, but I found myself not enjoying it as much as Paji’s original. The bass-line was really well done, but I believe it was the tone of the chords Grub used that ended up turning me off. Melodically they weren’t very catchy, and in general the remix seemed as if it lacked a solid idea and foundation.
All-in-all, an incredible breakout EP for Paji. Beside his great production skill, Paji’s musicality seems to be top notch as each of his tracks are unique and powerful in their own way. I can’t wait to hear more from this young producer, and make sure you get this EP!
