“I’ve had the luck that I have my first release on oldskool vinyl” An Interview With Dani L Mebius
It’s a rainy mondayafternoon, when I enter the building of AT productions. The reason? An interview with Dutch producer Dani L Mebius. Who is Dani L Mebius and how did he get so far?
When did you start as a producer?
When I take a look at my first release, I think it was in 2008 and that was just in the time when
vinyl was still used. I’ve had the luck that I have my first release on oldskool vinyl. Before my first
release i already made some music but I didn’t send my music to labels until I was satisfied about my
production level. So I’m working for 5 years as a producer right now.
How do you get in touch with labels?
Especially when you’re a beginning producer, you haven’t got a really big profile and the road to sign
your music to a good label can be a really hard job. But when you become more successful it will be
much easier to sign your music and that’s what happening for me right now. Due my successful latest
releases I have the luxury that labels are coming to me. This gives me a little bit more space and I
get more confident in my own sound. So nowadays it works in two ways, sometimes I will send my
productions to labels to taste and sometimes they’ll come to me.
How do you get in touch with other producers, for example your collaboration with Yves V?
Well, about the collaboration with Yves V, I had a release for Spinnin’ Records in 2011 called “Watch
Me Now”. After that track Yves came to me and told me that he loved the track and asked me if
we could do a collaboration. That’s how we teamed up. I created the melodic breakdown and Yves
created the enormous electro drop! It was kind of funny because we just first met during Amsterdam
Dance Event, after the track: Chained already was finished! hahaha
How would you like to describe your style?
That’s a difficult question. You can find me mostly sitting in the progressive house or the electro
house. Since a few years we don’t think in boxes anymore. People who are looking for new tracks
won’t search on genres that much anymore. They take a listen to a track and if they like it, they just
buy it. It doesn’t really matter if it’s progressive or electro or house It’s all about the track.
Did you have one or more certain hero’s, when you were a beginning producer?
Yes, but that was not really in the house scene. I grew up with tapes from Michael Jackson. He really
was a hero for me when I was ten. As a DJ I started DJ’ing with Techno music and notable names such
as Technasia and Adam beyer they were true heroes for me. Nowadays in the EDM scene, I don’t
think I really got a hero, maybe that’s also because I didn’t grow up within the scene. However, I
would love to collaborate with producers like Hardwell or Tiesto.
Where would you love to perform as a DJ in the future?
For 2013 I am focusing on the international scene. I am already playing in a lot of different countries
and for 2013 me and my team are planning some tours in different territories such as India and Asia.
For Holland I’d love to play for one of the big festivals in Holland, like Mysteryland or Dancevalley.
That would be really awesome. few years.
Can we expect some new tracks?
Off course! First of all together with Dance Rebels we start the “End Of The World Bootleg Challenge’
For four weeks I will produce a Bootleg every week that will be chosen by the audience. I am really
excited because remember the buzz It created last year when I did the Summer Bootleg Challenge!
Concerning my releases there is so much new releases coming. My next release is a collab between
me and DJ Punish and will be released on Spinnin Records. Next year Yves and I will come with a
follow up for Chained, close to Tomorrowland, so maybe we can make the track the Tomorrowland
Anthem, haha!
