Rene Breitbarth Drops Phunk EP On Deep Data
Who: Rene Breitbarth
What: Phunk EP
Where: Germany
Breitbarth’s new deep house EP is absolutely top notch. The first track, Phunk, is a funky (probably why it garnered the title “Phunk”) with an almost chicken-scratch roots-like guitar over an open drum beat. Heartbeat’s analog drum kit is what really stands out for me personally in the track. I really enjoy it when live-sounding instruments are used in dance music because, in all honesty, there is no way a drum machine could ever stand up to a real-live human drummer (Buddy Rich anyone?). But I also like how the track uses ambient noises to still bring across an incredible groove. Gentle Phunk is a bit heavier and slower, but the organs used bring across a very dark and interesting feel compared to the other tracks. The beat is also quite unique and I like the use of non-standard instruments. Finally, Sneaker uses that classic house beat with stabbing organs to make a groovy, very classic deep track. Check it out.
