Maya Jane Coles Releases Easier To Hide
Who: Maya Jane Coles
What: Easier To Hide EP
Where: The United Kingdom
Maya’s first release on her new record label “I Am Me” has just come out and is 4 tracks deep of deep house, and a bit of electronica. Maya’s sound in this album is very unique, and it seems as if she’s really doing what she wants on her own label which is great to hear. I would even say that these tracks, while house, lean more towards some new-age combination of house and pop ballads. Easier To Hide, the namesake of the EP is a deep, and groovy track with a very interesting intro. Maya’s vocals cover most of the track and while it is a great piece of music by any means, I wish it had stuck a bit more to the original idea that started in the intro as it seemed to be turning into a very good idea with a fresh feel to a very out-of-place style of beat for deep house. Over is a bit more energetic with a nice guitar overtop. I really enjoy the instrumentality of the track and how it leans away from the synth mumbo-jumbo of most house these days. Run With The Wild includes a lot less of Maya’s voice, and is a bit spacier than the other tracks, however I really enjoyed how the synth-line is used in combination with the bass as well as how the main chords of the track add a bit of tension while still being melodic enough to establish an idea. Back To Square One is a soulful electronica track. However, you must have a subwoofer to truly enjoy the sound quality of this track. The bass-line underneath is superb and laptop speakers do not do it justice by any means. All in all the EP is very good and shows off Maya’s unique style. For her first full release on I Am Me, it shows that she is off to many new interesting sounds in her work and I can’t wait to hear what she does as she matures as a musician.
