Mu EP Out On Vakant

Mu EP is a groovy, and unapologetically odd, yet unique Tech House/Techno EP by Alex Smoke. Baba Yaga, with its pumping bass-line, and light synths overtop builds slowly to a tense crescendo of ambient sound that gives you a very strange feeling of being in a place like Romania. Mu is a much slower, and more tech-heavy track with an arpeggiating high synth overtop a wavy melody line. I like the pace of the track as it seems to be a bit more contemplative and heavy in its content. It feels like there is a lot of emotion behind it in some way we’re unaware of. Polka is also a heavy track, but still carries a groove. However, it also carries an evil feel to it and yes, does have a few elements of a polka. I like the high-hat on 2 and 4 as it adds a classic house vibe to the track while everything else is very much new-age. Finally, the Sons of Tiki Remix of Polka is probably the most accessible and groovy track of the EP. With a pumping bass, organ, and background claps it possibly has the funkiest sound and feel of anything in the album. If it doesn’t get you moving, I don’t know what will. It still carries that foreboding sound that the entire album brings with it, but it relinquishes that for moments of pure, unadulterated, classic techno.
