Minnesota Releases Altered States EP
Who: Minnesota
What: To The Floor, Yoga Pants, Tokyo, Float, and Indian Summer (Feat. G Jones)
What: The United States
I absolutely love this EP and am incredibly surprised by their decision to release it for free. Minnesota’s style is so unique and melodic compared to their other dubstep counterparts that it makes the album far easier to listen to and enjoy.
I love “To The Floor”‘s thick, yet quite light synths that add a very emotional and powerful element to the main part of the track. Yet, they immediately switch it up with a very Trap-influenced “Yoga Pants” with an incredibly strong bass line that makes your woofer wobble perfectly. Tokyo is a wonderfully ambient, spacey track that samples a bit of Snoop & Dre. Once again very trap-influenced, but in a more melodic and less crazy-grind-party kind of way. I also love the bass in Tokyo. Its subtle in some parts and in the right areas of the song it becomes powerful and dominant just like true sound engineers enjoy. Float is a rap/dubstep combination featuring Zion 1 which lyrically, isn’t so great. They rhyme well no doubt, but the content is very much recycled from the stereotypical “fucking bitches, getting money” topics that famous recent rap artists like Big Sean, 2 Chainz, and Lil Wayne have decided to pursue. Definitely a far step from older rap artists that arguably have more talent and more in general to rap about. However, Zion’s rap shines in a few places and still doesn’t entirely ruin the track. Indian Summer, another trap-like tune, is a wonderfully minimal piece that closes the album out well. I also like the inclusion of the smoothed-out Afrojack-esque melody line. Definitely a great addition. Check it out!
